Working Class Hero

from ToiL by Steve Blaque

about

This track came about in 2010 when i was asked to perform at a John Lennon commemoration show in Beijing. Ahead of that show I prepared this song as one of the volume of songs that I would sing. The song later became part of the BLaque and BLunt duo and then also my own solo shows. This version is particularly dear to me since the initial guitar and vocals were recorded while I was very ill in June of 2016 and the solo done just one day out of hospital in late August. I'd been in hospital for 30 days and the pent up frustration and aggression came out in the guitar which was played using my Fender Stratocaster copy and recorded on my #2 recording system straight into a desk and using a guitar patch from my zoom R8 sound card that is installed into that system. It wasn't a one take guitar solo but done over a few takes aka 'comping' and then assembled inside cubase. I could feel the anguish inside me on this one for the life i once had and the life i am now left with.

I can say one other thing and that is that the style of this version was something developed in 2015 and it pleases me to know of the many different versions of this song i've played this is the one I like best, that suits my style best and makes me most comfortable playing.

lyrics

Lyrics
As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty-odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they're telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
