The Cross

about

This song gets in on the format for the album mainly because it was a song I used to perform live back in the 1980's with the band I was in called The Repromasters. While i never actually played and sung it live as Steve BLaque I chose to include the piece for two reasons. The first of these was that along with a song titled Pablo Picasso this track (The Cross) was one of the very first songs i learned to play and sing simultaneously and the other that this was a testimony I did for Prince in 2016 upon his death. That version was shot for film and I simply took the audio file made some adjustments and left it totally raw and loose and put it on this album. It's one of the very few times in my life where I have put my lead guitar skills (or lack thereof) up for show and as I near the end of my own life I decided that this was something that at least once I would do. Loved Prince's version and also the version the Repromasters did and hopefully you'll appreciate the sound i've gone for here. Unlike the other songs on the album this one uses drums and those drums are made from loops and from The Repromaster's former drummer Leigh Ryan

lyrics

The Cross
Black day, stormy night
No love, no hope in sight
Don't cry, he is coming
Don't die without knowing the cross
Ghettos to the left of us
Flowers to the right
There'll be bread for all of us
If we can just bear the cross

Sweet song of salvation
A pregnant mother sings
She lives in starvation
Her children need all that she brings

We all have our problems
Some big, some are small
Soon all of our problems
Will be taken by the cross

Black day, stormy night
No love, no hope in sight
Don't cry for he is coming
Don't die without knowing the cross

Ghettos to the left of us
Flowers to the right
There'll be bread for all, y'all
If we can just, just bear the cross, yeah

We all have our problems
Some are big, some are small
Soon all of our problems, y'all
Will be taken by the cross

The cross
